Fire water tank quotation: what to include in your brief

For a fire-water tank quotation, start with the capacity and configuration specified by your fire system designer. Add the site layout, suction and connection requirements, access information and installation responsibilities. The tank is one part of the wider fire system, so an enquiry should make those interfaces clear.
This checklist helps property owners, consultants, contractors and procurement teams organise a useful quotation request. It does not determine the fire reserve, replace the fire system design or establish system approval.
Who specifies the required fire-water volume?
Your fire system designer should define the storage requirement and the relevant design basis for the project. Send the current specification or consultant’s brief with the enquiry. Include the units and explain which capacity basis the requirement uses.
If the volume is not yet confirmed, identify that as an open design item. A convenient tank size or a general estimate of a building’s daily water use should not become the fire-water specification by default.
Where a dedicated fire reserve is required, explain how it is to remain available for that duty. Any proposed sharing with other water uses needs to be resolved through the project design rather than assumed in the quotation.
What should the site layout show?
Provide the proposed tank position, available footprint, height constraints and nearby buildings or boundaries. Mark the intended relationship to pumps, pipework, access routes and other equipment identified by the project team.
If more than one tank is being considered, send the proposed arrangement and the designer’s capacity requirement. Several tanks on a constrained site are a layout option to assess, not evidence that a particular arrangement is suitable for every project.
Which connection and fitting details matter?
Share the specified suction arrangement and the available inlet, outlet and other connection details. Include the required positions, sizes and materials where known. Identify drawings that remain provisional and the person or team responsible for confirming them.
Steel Water Tanks’ fire-protection offer includes project-specific discussion of vortex control, level indication, inspection access and dedicated reserve arrangements. Ask the quotation to identify the features agreed for your installation; do not treat every optional item as a universal inclusion.
Keep tank supply boundaries and adjoining pipework responsibilities explicit. This helps prevent a fitting shown on one drawing from being assumed to belong to a different contractor’s scope.
How will delivery and installation be coordinated?
Describe the delivery route, gates, overhead restrictions, unloading area and working space around the tank location. Include any security, access-control or working-hour arrangements that could affect the installation.
State who will prepare the site and confirm the foundations. Provide the intended programme, current design stage and dates when outstanding information is expected. Tank configuration, access and foundation readiness all need review before the installation programme is confirmed.
What needs to be agreed before handover?
Confirm the responsibilities for tank installation, connected system work, inspection, testing and approval with the fire system team. Ask which documents and operating or maintenance information will be supplied, and which project parties must provide the remaining records.
A tank quotation is not proof that the complete fire system has been designed, commissioned or approved. Keep these separate milestones visible in the project plan.

- Current fire system specification and required storage volume, with units and capacity basis.
- Proposed tank position, layout, available dimensions and height limits.
- Specified suction arrangement, connections and fittings.
- Delivery route, access restrictions and installation working area.
- Foundation and adjoining-work responsibilities.
- Design, inspection, testing and approval responsibilities.
- Target programme, project stage and unresolved design questions.
Send the specification for a tank quotation
Request a fire-water tank quotation with your consultant’s brief, drawings and site information. Steel Water Tanks can review the tank configuration and supply/installation scope against those requirements, with the wider system design coordinated by your fire system team.
